MORE AVIAN INFLUENZA CASES
Two additional cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) have been identified in Minnesota. There are now confirmed cases in two commercial turkey flocks in Meeker County and one case in a backyard flock in Hennepin County.
Dr. Shauna Voss is Senior Veterinarian for the Minnesota Board of Animal Health. She says it's not a surprise that more cases of HPAI have occurred this fall because there have been detections in wild birds throughout the summer. Listen
CROPS NEAR MATURITY
The latest USDA crop report puts 92% of Minnesota's corn crop in the dough stage with 47% dented. Overall, 62% of the corn crop in the state is rated as good to excellent.
Soybeans are rated at 64% good to excellent with 98% of the crop setting pods.
Dairyland Seed agronomist Brian Weller says the warm days and cool nights have helped the state's soybean crop mature and the harvest season isn't far off. Listen
SUGARBEET HARVEST NEARS
Todd Geselius, vice president of agriculture at Southern Minnesota Beet Sugar Cooperative says the sugarbeet crop is progressing nicely. Geselius says pre-pile harvest will begin on September 19. Pre-pile involves harvesting only the beets the plant in Renville needs to operate because it's typically too warm to pile beets until later in the year. Listen
Geselius says optimal harvest conditions include daytime highs in the 50s with lows in the 30s and 40s with no rain.
SOYBEAN DEMAND IN CHINA
Despite a faulty reporting system from the USDA that is not providing current information on agriculture exports, international soybean trade consultant John Baize says it appears that Chinese demand for U.S. soybeans has increased, but it's hard to say by how much. Listen

WARM, NOT HOT SUMMER
Minnesota Assistant State Climatologist Pete Boulay says the state experienced a warm, but not particularly hot summer. The hottest temperatures occurred in June. Boulay says many areas of Minnesota experienced a mostly normal summer. Listen
ETHANOL'S CARBON FOOTPRINT
With the push on for electric vehicles in many parts of the country, ethanol proponents continue to pound the message that biofuels need to be in the nation's energy mix. American Coalition for Ethanol CEO Brian Jennings says that E-85 powered vehicles have a lower carbon footprint than many electric vehicles used today. He says the ethanol industry is not afraid to have open discussions about net zero emissions and carbon footprints. Listen
ATRAZINE COMMENT WINDOW
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced earlier this summer that they are revising the registration for the herbicide atrazine. The move would decrease the amount farmers could use to protect crops like corn. The Minnesota Corn Growers Association (MCGA) is encouraging producers to submit comments to the EPA on how atrazine is used on their farms. MCGA board member Dana Allen-Tully of Eyota says farmers need to voice their opinion to convince EPA to change their proposal. Listen
The deadline for submitting comments is October 7.
