DICAMBA CUTOFF MAINTAINED
State specific restrictions for the use of three dicamba herbicides will stay the same for 2023 in Minnesota. The Minnesota Department of Agriculture has announced that the cutoff date for applications of Engenia, Xtendi-Max and Tavium will be June 12 south of Interstate 94 and June 30 north of I-94. Minnesota Agriculture Commissioner Thom Petersen says the timeline that was used in 2022 resulted in fewer dicamba drift complaints than in previous years. Listen

AMERICAN  FARM BUREAU CONVENTION CONCLUDES
The American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) annual convention wrapped up today in San Juan, Puerto Rico. AFBF set policy priorities for the organization at the convention. Among the issues is farm labor reform. The Senate last year failed to advance a last-minute Farm Workforce Modernization Act, a bill that some thought to be the best chance for farm labor reforms in decades. The legislation was passed by the House more than a year earlier. AFBF President Zippy Duvall says that legislation still didn't fully address the needs of agriculture. Listen

While in San Juan, AFBF and John Deere signed a memorandum of understanding  that ensures farmers’ and ranchers’ right to repair their own farm equipment. The MOU is the culmination of several years of discussions between AFBF and John Deere.

NO COMPROMISE ON MEXICAN GMO BAN
After a speech at the AFBF convention, Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack said the U.S. won’t back down or compromise on its stance against Mexico’s plan to ban imports of genetically modified yellow corn. Vilsack says the American government is supposed to reply by January 15 to Mexico’s proposal to delay the ban until 2025. U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai has spoken to her Mexican counterpart about the dispute. Vilsack said that if Mexico doesn’t agree to withdraw its import ban, the White House will then push the USMCA on trade rules. Vilsack told Mexico’s President Lopez Obrador that he won’t be able to find enough non-GMO corn to import and feed the country’s livestock sector.

EPA RENEWALBE FUEL HEARINGS

Listen

Syverson says ethanol proponents are continuing to push for policies that open the market to higher blends of ethanol.

BIOFUELS PROPONENTS UNHAPPY WITH EPA VOLUMES
Clean Fuels Alliance America staff expressed frustration with the proposed volumes for biomass-based diesel since they do not match the volumes that are already in the market and do not account for expected growth in capacity and feedstocks.

“The proposed rule significantly undercounts existing biomass-based diesel production and fails to provide growth for investments the industry has already made in additional capacity, including for sustainable aviation fuel,” Clean Fuels CEO Donnell Rehagen stated in testimony to EPA.

Minnesota Soybean Growers Association President Bob Worth says the EPA is putting up roadblocks that thwart the inhibit the growth of biodiesel in the U.S. at a time when demand for lower carbon fuels is growing. Listen

YEAR ROUND E15 A PRIORITY
The major focus for the American Coalition for Ethanol (ACE) is increasing ethanol use. Katie Muckenhirn, ACE vice president of public affair says uninterrupted access to E15 is a priority for the coalition. Without action, some markets could lose access to E15 by June 1. Muckenhirn says there was congressional support for year round E15 during the last session, but nothing was enacted.
